The Praxis of Transformative Research: Revisiting Paulo Freire
Volume XXXX • Issue 4 • 2024

The demand that research on social-ecological problems should develop transformative power has manifested itself in the concept of transformative research. It combines knowledge production with transformative action dealing with the concrete situations at stake and has brought forth collaborative research approaches and alliances across societal domains. In Paulo Freire’s work we encounter a radical vision of research and learning as abilities to understand and transform the world that this special issue mobilises for current discourses. The contributions elaborate on Freire’s notion of transformation, connectivity as research principle, affectivity as an important dimension of research, and critically examine the project-centrism in contemporary societies as well as the concept of transformation itself.

This article explores the concept of transformation in the work of Paulo Freire and its potential for transformative research. It traces the development of the idea of transformation in Freire’s main books, introduces the basic figure of Freire’s concept of praxis, his emphasis on humans as situated beings, his concept of concientisation, as well as pathways to humanisation and liberation. The article shows how the radical entanglement of action and reflection and the aim of becoming more human in transforming situations can create a real turnaround in transformative research.

Critical Hope. On Affective, Epistemic and Ethico-Political Care in Participatory Action Research

Affects constitute a fundamental aspect of research as they condition its process and effects. This paper focusses on hope as a key affect in collaborative research. It presents Paulo Freire’s defnition of critical hope, traces some links with participatory action research, and proposes a series of considerations to foster critical hope in collaborative research processes. The relationship between the care of affects and the transformative effects of PAR is explored, highlighting the role of critical hope in the construction of knowledge and actions. These exercises around critical hope and its links with research aim at broadening the attention commonly given to epistemic and ethico-political aspects in order to include the affective dimension of research processes and its transformative power.

Connectivity: A Research Principle of Paulo Freire

Sprache: EnglischSeiten: 52-71https://doi.org/10.20446/JEP-2414-3197-40-4-52
  • Abstract
  • Literatur

The article explores the notion of connectivity, associated with the work of Paulo Freire, as a principle for research methodology. Research is conceived of as a way of pronouncing the world, where word and action (in Freire’s words, the “actionword” (palavração), reading the world and transforming action, are in permanent creative tension. In the first part of the article, connectivity is identified as a dimension of the inter and transdisciplinary character of Paulo Freire’s theoretical elaboration. The second part presents three practices that express Paulo Freire’s influence in different situations: as a theoretical basis for the elaboration of a reference framework to understand the pedagogies of participation, as inspiration for a collective practice for the elaboration of a municipal atlas, and as a theoretical and methodological orientation to understand teaching practices. The theoretical reflection that follows seeks to sinthesis with the concepts of territoriality and contextuality the role of reality lived as a space of inter- and transdiciplinarity. In the conclusion, this reflection is complemented by the conceptualisation of men and women as beings of relations.

Criticising “Logframitis” with Paulo Freire.

Sprache: EnglischSeiten: 72-91https://doi.org/10.20446/JEP-2414-3197-40-4-72
  • Abstract
  • Literatur
  • Keywords

This article deals with the problematic dominance of the project logic of our times, a dominance which has been noticeable for decades. The author refers particularly to development projects, which in his view aim to demotivate, separate and paralyse people‘s struggles by not recognising their self-determined paths to change. Projects are based on what the author calls “the logic of the logical framework” – the “logiframitis”. The author criticises the project-centric and finally positivistic vision of the world that is created by this approach. Drawing on Paulo Freire, he calls for a political approach that recognises social and political processes instead of projects and does not smooth over conflicts. The article argues in favour of subversion, because it is important to work on a shared world view, as Freire explains in chapter 4 of the Pedagogy of the Oppressed.

This article problematises the concept of transformation for educational thinking. It does it in several steps. In the first one, it studies its meaning, together with the concept of change in the work of Paulo Freire. In the second section, it brings, as a contrast, the ideas of transformation and experience of Michel Foucault. Finally, in a last section, it presents a critique of the concept of transformation inspired by some Brazilian indigenous and afrodescendant thinkers, such as Ailton Krenak and Antônio Bispo dos Santos.
