Intersectionality has become an integral part of international and German-language gender studies. The concept is firmly established, particularly in research fields that address global inequalities or issues of social and cultural difference(s) and heterogeneity(ies)—despite differences in theoretical frameworks and methodological and practical applications. The aim of this issue is to reflect on different approaches and understandings and to shed light on theoretical and methodological approaches, thereby facilitating an engagement with the concept, particularly from the perspective of sociological gender studies. Drawing on their intersectional research practices in various regional, disciplinary, and applied contexts, the authors discuss and reflect on how they have conceptualized intersectionality, which theoretical perspectives have informed their research, and what challenges arose during empirical implementation. The anchoring and implementation of the concept in various contexts are thus the focus of the articles and the interview with Kathy Davies in this issue.
